How can I join some kind of ensemble/symphony?
  • I really want to get better with music. I play percussion by the way, and it's only been for about a year if that matters, but my teacher says that I'm a natural percussionist. I want to join something possibly outside of school that's like a concert band at any school, but with harder music. The problem is I'm only 13. Any ideas of where to start?

    Thanks!

  • You can skim through advertisements in your local paper/bulletins or anywhere else you think you might be able to find something about a music group for kids/teens. If you haven't already asked your teacher if he/she knows about any ensembles then they might have be able to help you. Try asking others you know who play an instrument and maybe search the internet.

If you've really tried everything, and you still can't find one, you might consider starting your own little music group. This might not be practical if you don't have the time and money to get music. If you agree with your parents and music teachers, you can ask some of your friends to join you and together you can form a kind of band and play any type of music you like. (I know of several music groups like this and they are doing pretty well and it's a lot of fun!) If this isn't what you want you might just have to go to some music workshops in the holidays and during the terms. These are usually very good but it depends on where you live. I suggest you check those out because they usually play harder music than normal school ensembles. Good luck and have fun!
