Motorcycle Pants - Check Out Your Options
You already know you shouldn't be riding your bike wearing shorts. If we lived in a perfect world and you never had to worry about an accident or wipe out it might be just fine but our world is far from perfect so the possibility is always there and you need to be dressed to protect yourself.
1. Blue JeansAlmost everyone you see on a street bike will be wearing blue jeans. After all they are the most common pant worn and they do offer protection against a wipe out, they're comfortable, and they are very affordable.
Problem is they are not wind proof nor are they water proof and they don't really offer all that much protection. You can only slide a few feet before they wear through. That said they are still the most popular choice.
2. ChapsAlthough not technically pants they are considered as such and they are also very popular with cruisers. You can buy chaps in either textile or leather and either offers a lot more protection than your jeans do.
The problem with chaps is that they only provide protection to the leg and knee area and there is no protection for the groin, hip, or your butt area which are actually common landing areas. They are comfy to wear and they are water and wind resistant. You'll just have to decide if they offer enough benefits.
3. Leather PantsThey may not be as popular as chaps or jeans but they are very popular too. The biggest reason for the limited market is the price but boy they'll keep you safer than any other pant style. They can be a little heavier and warmer to wear but they offer the highest level of protection and some styles even let you wear your jeans underneath.
4. Textile PantsThis style of pant has really made some great improvements in the last few years. New materials are much less bulky than older fabrics and they are also a lot more comfy. They usually go right over your jeans and they provide the same type of protection as leather but they are lighter and cheaper.
5. Armor JeansThese are actually not new to the market. It's just in recent years they've gained recognition. Similar to regular jeans but made from a heavy denim with extra stitching and extra padding in the important areas like knees, hips, and butt. They don't last as long as some of the more specialized pants but they are very affordable and much better than regular jeans.
All of these options are available at your local dealer, motorcycle attire retailer, and online through many different reputable sites that specialize in such items. And the great news about shopping online is that there is the potential to save a great deal of money. It's not unusual to save 50% or more.
Motorcycle pants need to be part of your motorcycle attire. Don't put it at the bottom of the list, rather put it right up there with the jacket and helmet.
