Why do little dogs live longer then big dogs, when normally large animals live longer then small ones?
this seems to hold true for most of the animal kingdom, except for the dog. a great dane will only live 12 years tops and a terrier could live some 16 + years.
Why is that?
Dogs come from wolves. When they get much bigger than wolves they are reaching a size their basic systems were not meant to support.
Parrots live a long time. They are not all that big. And tortoises outlive elephants, even though they are much smaller. Bigger animals tend to have to live longer in order to reach their appropriate size to have offspring, and must watch the offspring until they get to near the appropriate size. Often they have less offspring too, so they often have to live longer just to reproduce.
For instance an elephant will be pregnant for something like 2 years, and the baby won't leave its mother's side until like 3 more years? And that is just one calf. So elephants have to live a long time just to replenish their numbers. But it could very well be that smaller elephants (when not killed) would live longer.
irregardless of size.
elephants and mice share an entirely different genus.
